It’s official; Apple is exiting the wireless router business.
Apple has already begun to sell off its remaining inventory of AirPort products in their transition away from wireless routers. The AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and the AirPort Time Capsules have all been discontinued.
In a statement to 9to5Mac, they stated that they’re discontinuing the Apple AirPort base station products but that they’ll be available through Apple’s online store, retail stores, and Apple Authorized Resellers while supplies last.
Back in November of 2016, it was reported by Bloomberg and 9to5Mac that Apple had disbanded the team that was responsible for developing Apple’s routers, so unfortunately, the writing was on the wall.
While today’s technology climate leaves it unlikely that Apple will reenter the router market in the near future, there’s always hope that they’ll develop an even better system in the future.
