Protecting your privacy in today’s connected world can be a full time job – at least. You may not be able to go completely dark to the data brokers and others who are out there in the jungle that is the internet, but you can take steps to protect yourself.
CBS aired a great segment on personal security. They suggest some simple things you can do to protect your personal information. You may not want to go to the extremes discussed in the video, but certainly simple things like changing your browser or search engine is a painless way to take a step in the right direction.
Start With Your Own Computer
- Are you running reputable anti-virus tools? And are they up to date?
- Are you utilizing a firewall? And is it configured correctly?
- Never download anything, even from people you know, until you verify it. Simply ask them about the attachment/link they’ve sent.
- Password protect your phone or other mobile devices
Start With Your Own Accounts
- Make your passwords strong. And do not use the same password for all of your accounts.
- Do not provide any information that you are not required to provide.
- Never share your account information with others.
