SolarWinds hack gives hackers access to thousands of companies

Hackers were able to access emails and other secure information from the U.S. Treasury, Justice, Commerce, and other departments and agencies due to what Microsoft is calling the largest and most sophisticated attack that the world has ever seen.

The hacking campaign targeted the SolarWinds Corporation, a company that develops software that helps businesses manage their networks, systems, and IT infrastructure.

Data of up to 18,000 SolarWinds customers that used the company’s Orion network monitoring software could be compromised.

Cybersecurity experts have stated that it could take months to properly identify which systems have been compromised and then to fully expel the hackers.

Microsoft president Brad Smith has been quoted saying, “I think from a software engineering perspective, it’s probably fair to say that this is the largest and most sophisticated attack the world has ever seen.”

U.S. intelligence services believe that Russia is behind this sophisticated attack and that they were attempting to collect intelligence rather than intending to commit destructive acts.

Russia has denied any responsibility for the cyberattack.
